Classic Activities to Celebrate Fall

Can you believe it? The scorching summer has finally come to an end and thankfully fall has arrived. The season that brings brightly colored leaves, crisp air, and all things pumpkin also brings fun opportunities to play and learn with your kids. While you can’t ignore the fall activity staples like carving pumpkins and visiting your favorite apple orchard, you can certainly add to the fun with these simple and classic activities for your family.

Leaf Rubbings

This activity that you probably did as a kid is still an easy yet creative way for your child to recognize the changing season. This simple activity leaves you with an intricate portrait showing the beauty of fall leaves.

First, take your child on a nature walk and leaf hunt to select a variety of leaves. Then, cover the leaf with either parchment paper or wax paper and color with colored pencil or crayon.

This is a great time to point out the different parts of a leaf and explain the reasons behind the color change.

Find full instructions (and a refresher on the science behind changing leaves) here.

Thankful Tree

Even after Halloween, there are many opportunities to continue the fall fun with Thanksgiving activities. This next activity is extremely simple but it is a way for kids to write down what they are thankful for and remember it every day.

This is an excellent time to emphasize the importance of gratitude and appreciating the people and things closest to our hearts.

Simply trace your hand prints on construction paper and write down things you are thankful for. Trace a large tree trunk on brown construction paper and apply to a wall. Apply your paper hands as leaves on the tree and add often!
